What It Is

Real strength gains without heavy loading.

Right after surgery, with an injury, an arthritic joint, or simply an older body, lifting heavy weight isn’t an option. But muscle can still weaken quickly when it isn’t loaded, which makes recovery slower and harder.

Blood flow restriction training uses a specialized cuff, placed high on the arm or leg. It partially and safely limits blood flow while you train with light weight, about 20–30% of what you’d normally lift. That combination tricks the muscle into responding as if it were lifting far heavier. You build strength without stressing the joint or tissue that isn’t ready for it yet.

It’s applied and monitored by your Doctor of Physical Therapy, with pressure calibrated to you specifically. It’s not a device you strap on and guess with.

Questions, Answered

Blood flow restriction training, no mystery.

The cuff only partially restricts blood flow. It’s calibrated to your limb and blood pressure before every session, then monitored throughout. Your Doctor of Physical Therapy screens you first to confirm it’s appropriate for you. It’s a controlled clinical tool, not something applied without oversight.

Most people feel the muscle fatigue set in faster than they expect, even with the light weight. That burning sensation is the point. It’s a sign the muscle is being pushed to respond and adapt, without the joint stress heavier weight would cause.

Coverage depends on your plan, since BFR is sometimes coded differently than a standard PT visit. We verify your exact benefits before your first session, so there’s no surprise on your bill. Questions before then? Call us at (281) 888-0047.
